Sundo Yoon’s Cure series
Sundo Yoon is a designer based in South Korea. Cure Series is a series of works by Sundo Yoon, which creates a series of patterns by carving a sculptural metal surface and combines them into an unstable structure. Concentrating on the repetitive action of cutting metal and the time to create a structure, I feel the improvement of things such as the low self-esteem that has been inherited from the artist's childhood.
The reason I scratch metal is because of the way I find beauty in repetition and see it through. But I'm just saying that repeated actions can have a positive impact, even if they aren't usually pretty. I have had low self-esteem since I was young and hurt myself more than others with negative thoughts and words. There was nothing that compared me to others and did not love me. Because I've been like that since I was young.
After my undergrad, I started using the grinder because I had to have a different weapon than everyone else. The grinder was a noisy and dangerous tool, but it hit a slump and left me with no other options. So I had to do it. The grinder was the scariest tool for me, and the fire and danger of the grinder naturally made me focus on repetitive actions and stop thinking negatively during work hours. The process of making vertical and horizontal patterns by carving hard metal gradually improved me, who was an infinitely negative person. The work of ‘Cure’ is a work of drawing in my own way on a flat surface before it is a work in the form of furniture.
When hard metal is shaved off with a sharp blade, a more radiant surface is encountered, and when looking at the countless traces cut away like scars, it seems to be looking at oneself. In the end, I believe that I can shine like everyone else. And through this work, I want to convey a small inspiration to others that they can grow and shine through negative moments.
